While renting a home or apartment can be more affordable than owning, when it comes to deposits, renters can be left feeling frustrated. Even if you seemingly scrub every visible inch of your apartment before you move, there is still the possibility that you will lose a majority of your deposit for cleaning fees – an expensive proposition when considering the various expenses you will likely incur during the moving process. Fortunately, by targeting certain areas of concern that renters often forget to clean, you can end up saving yourself some cash and win back as much of your deposit as possible.
Before you move, be sure to clean the following:
1. The refrigerator: Your refrigerator operates 24/7, attracting a considerable amount of dirt, grease, and stains in the process. Unplug your refrigerator and move it away from the wall. Scrub the wall, the sides and top of the fridge, and the spot on the floor where the fridge usually sits. Finally, once the outside has been cleaned, scrub the interior shelves, walls, and drawers with a warm solution of a quarter cup of baking soda added to a gallon of water. Rinse thoroughly and dry to avoid leaving streaks.
2. The oven/stovetop: Like your refrigerator, your oven will likely accumulate a fair amount of grease and stains after months or years of use. Most modern ovens have a self-cleaning cycle which makes cleaning a cinch, whereas older appliances will require some good old-fashioned scrubbing. Instead of using harsh, abrasive oven cleaning chemicals, use a paste made of baking soda and water to clean the inside and oven racks.
3. The shower and bathtub: Unless your home or apartment is equipped with a water softener, your shower and bathtub will likely develop hard-to-remove calcium deposits on the sides. Spraying a solution of equal parts vinegar and water on these deposits can help to loosen them and allow them to be scrubbed off. If this does not work, use a baking soda paste and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.
4. Baseboards: Baseboards can be very easy to overlook since they are underfoot and rarely focused upon. To remove dust and these fixtures, go over them using your vacuum’s brush attachment. After, use a water and vinegar solution to cut through any grease or grime which may have built up. Cotton swabs dipped in this solution can be useful for hard-to-reach areas.
